What is DRSABCD?

DRSABCD is Australia’s official first aid action plan, set by the ARC Guideline 1.1. It stands for Danger, Response, Send for help, Airway, Breathing, CPR, Defibrillation. It is the sequence every Australian-trained first aider uses when responding to an unresponsive casualty, and it is the foundation of every HLTAID009 CPR and HLTAID011 First Aid course taught in Australia.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does DRSABCD stand for in Australian first aid?

DRSABCD is the Australian first aid action plan used to respond to emergencies. It stands for Danger, Response, Send for help, Airway, Breathing, CPR and Defibrillation (AED). The DRSABCD process helps first aiders assess a situation safely and provide appropriate emergency care in line with Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines.

COWS is a simple assessment tool used in first aid to check a casualty’s responsiveness. It stands for Can you hear me?, Open your eyes, What’s your name?, Squeeze my hands. These prompts help determine a person’s level of consciousness and response.

According to current Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines, the CPR ratio for adults, children and infants is 30 chest compressions followed by 2 rescue breaths (30:2). CPR should continue until emergency services arrive, the person recovers, or you are physically unable to continue.

The required HLTAID unit depends on your industry and workplace requirements. HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is commonly required for annual CPR updates, while HLTAID011 Provide First Aid is the standard workplace first aid qualification. Childcare and education workers often require HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting.

HLTAID009 covers CPR only, including chest compressions, rescue breaths and AED use. HLTAID011 includes CPR plus broader first aid skills such as managing medical emergencies, injuries, asthma, anaphylaxis and other workplace incidents.
