Frequently Asked Questions
What does DRSABCD stand for in Australian first aid?
DRSABCD is the Australian first aid action plan used to respond to emergencies. It stands for Danger, Response, Send for help, Airway, Breathing, CPR and Defibrillation (AED). The DRSABCD process helps first aiders assess a situation safely and provide appropriate emergency care in line with Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines.
What does COWS mean when assessing a casualty?
COWS is a simple assessment tool used in first aid to check a casualty’s responsiveness. It stands for Can you hear me?, Open your eyes, What’s your name?, Squeeze my hands. These prompts help determine a person’s level of consciousness and response.
What is the CPR ratio for adults, children and infants in Australia?
According to current Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines, the CPR ratio for adults, children and infants is 30 chest compressions followed by 2 rescue breaths (30:2). CPR should continue until emergency services arrive, the person recovers, or you are physically unable to continue.
Which HLTAID unit do I need for my workplace?
The required HLTAID unit depends on your industry and workplace requirements. HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is commonly required for annual CPR updates, while HLTAID011 Provide First Aid is the standard workplace first aid qualification. Childcare and education workers often require HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting.
What is the difference between HLTAID009 and HLTAID011?
HLTAID009 covers CPR only, including chest compressions, rescue breaths and AED use. HLTAID011 includes CPR plus broader first aid skills such as managing medical emergencies, injuries, asthma, anaphylaxis and other workplace incidents.
Are First Aid Pro CPR and first aid certificates nationally accredited?
Yes. First Aid Pro delivers nationally recognised training as a Registered Training Organisation (RTO 31124). Successful participants receive accredited certification that is recognised across Australia.
How long is an Australian first aid certificate valid for?
Most Australian first aid certificates, including HLTAID011, are valid for 3 years, while CPR certification (HLTAID009) is recommended to be renewed every 12 months in line with Australian Resuscitation Council recommendations.
What should I do if someone is bitten by a snake in Australia?
Call 000 immediately and keep the person as still and calm as possible. Apply a pressure immobilisation bandage firmly over the bite site and affected limb, and do not wash the bite area. Avoid cutting, sucking or attempting to catch the snake. Prompt medical treatment is critical.
Can I download these first aid charts for free?
Yes of course! Our first aid charts, CPR posters and emergency response resources are available as free downloads to help individuals, workplaces, schools and community groups improve first aid awareness and preparedness.
