HLTWHS005 Conduct manual tasks safely, also known as manual handling training, is conducted at our Sunshine Coast training centre. The training centre is fully equipped with hoists, hospital beds, slide sheets and everything needed to demonstrate conducting manual tasks safely. With plenty of hands-on practice and practical examples, we aim to make this course informative, fun and enjoyable.

The Manual Handling Refresher course is intended as an annual update. Participants must have completed an HLTWHS005 – Conduct manual tasks safely course previously.

It is recommended that all staff are directly involved in moving and handling clients. Staff and carers directly involved in moving people include, but are not limited to, nurses, student nurses (pre-placement), physiotherapists, occupational therapists, medical staff, ambulance staff, health and nurse aides and people working with the disabled and aged in the community skills are updated annually.

CPD hours can be claimed according to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, ‘Continuing Professional Development Standard.’

HLTWHS005 Conduct manual tasks safely, also known as manual handling training, is conducted at our Sunshine Coast training centre. The training centre is fully equipped with hoists, hospital beds, slide sheets and everything needed to demonstrate conducting manual tasks safely. 

With plenty of hands-on practice and practical examples, we aim to make this course informative, fun and enjoyable.

This course is specifically intended for nurses, health workers, support workers and aged care workers working in hospitals and residential care settings. It is designed in accordance with the relevant state/territory legislation, including the hazardous manual tasks code of practice.

How is the Course Delivered?

Training and assessment are delivered Face to Face within just 2 hours.

Prior to attending the face-to-face training and assessment, you will be required to complete the pre-course reading. This must be completed and digitally submitted before you attend the face-to-face session.

This course content will be available to you through your online student portal once you have fully enrolled in the course, and can be completed at your own pace and at a time best suited to your schedule and working hours – provided it’s completed before the date of your face-to-face session.

The exact amount of time required to complete the self-paced content varies from student to student based on working speed and prior knowledge, but we recommend leaving at least a half day free to work through the material.

How is the Course Structured?

All participants will be assessed through a combination of the following assessment methods:

  • Practical Demonstrations: Simulated scenarios/Role playing
  • Project (Risk Assessment)
  • Knowledge Assessment

Course Requirements

  • Participants must be 14 years of age (Those who are under 18 must present an enrolment form from a parent or guardian to accept responsibility) 
  • Complete a risk assessment to reduce risks from manual tasks
  • Communicate effectively to contribute to a consultation process about improving manual handling safety
  • Use literacy and numeracy skills as require reading, interpret, and apply guidelines and protocols (e.g. read manufactures instruction and safety signs)

Physical Attributes Requirements

  • Have the physical capacity to perform manual handling tasks safely

Certificate Issued Same Day

Participants who successfully complete this course will be awarded a Statement of Attainment for HTLWHS005 Conduct manual tasks safely. FirstAidPro aims to issue statements digitally, via email on the day that the training is successfully completed (subject to certain conditions). In order to issue your Statement, you need to have completed the self-paced learning component and the online quiz, and provided First Aid Pro with your verified USI (unique student identifier) before the course commences. Failure to provide this information may result in a delay in issuing your statement of attainment.

  • Transfer from chair to chair/commode/toilet.
  • Hoisting from chair to bed/bed to chair/commode to bed
  • Assisted walking – raising a fallen person
  • Instructing the person to raise themselves
  • Hoisting a person from the floor
  • Followed legally compliant workplace procedures to prepare for and complete at least 3 different manual tasks relevant to the work role
  • contributed to a consultation process about improving manual handling

Knowledge Evidence

The participant must be able to demonstrate essential knowledge required to effectively complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the work role. This includes knowledge of:

  • key information from work health and safety (WHS) regulations relating to manual tasks and the national code of practice
  • role and responsibilities of the employer and employees in relation to manual handling safety
  • ways in which individual workers are involved in consultation about workplace health and safety
  • reporting mechanisms required for workplace injury and compensation claims
  • key aspects of the risk management approach to manual tasks
  • risk factors and potential sources of risks of hazardous manual tasks:

         Repetition, forces, postures, vibration and systems of work. 

  • types of manual task activity and the types of injuries that can result
  • the relationship between the human body and risk of injury from performing manual tasks
  • functions of the human body:
    • the basic function of the spine
    • body postures
    • types of muscles
    • principles of levers
  • manual handling techniques that support safe work practice including :
    • preparing the load/client
    • preparing the environment
    • using the stronger muscles in the legs where possible, rather than spinal muscles
    • maintaining a neutral spine when lifting and carrying
    • using two hands to lift or carry
    • keeping the load close to the body/centre of gravity
    • avoiding lifting objects above shoulder height
    • minimising repetitive movements
    • positions not held for long periods of time
    • avoiding twisting by repositioning feet whilst turning
  • types and operational features of mechanical aids, tools and equipment

Performance Evidence

The participant must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be evidence that the candidate has:

  • Followed legally compliant workplace procedures to prepare for and complete at least 3 different manual tasks relevant to the work role
  • contributed to a consultation process about improving manual handling
