Frequently Asked Questions

What is Manual handling?

Manual handling refers to the transporting or supporting of a load by hand or bodily force. It includes activities such as lifting, putting down, pushing, pulling, carrying, or moving loads, objects, or even a person. The specifics of what manual handling jobs involve depends on the workplace in which the task is performed.

How Long is a Manual Handling Course?

Our HLTWHS005 Conduct Manual Tasks Safely course is offered with a hybrid delivery model. You'll be required to complete online, theoretical learning in your own time before attending a 4 hour, face-to-face training session at our Gold Coast training facility.

What is the Qualification for Manual Handling?

HLTWHS005 Conduct Manual Tasks Safely is the nationally accredited qualification more commonly known as Manual Handling course or training.

Do I Need a Manual Handling Certificate?

While manual handling is relevant to many careers, few outright require a manual handling certificate to apply for. Much of the time, the necessity of manual handling training is determined by individual organisations. To note, most plumbers and electricians who are not self-employed will require a certificate.

That said, having a manual handling assessment is beneficial to most jobs and having one before applying shows commitment to work health and safety. Positions where it is most beneficial include any role which regularly requires performing potentially hazardous manual tasks and where the risk of injury is higher than usual.

Does Manual Handling Count as Continuing Professional Development?

Yes, manual handling training can count as Continuing Professional Development (CPD). There are various online courses that are CPD approved and cover manual handling, providing training on the safe handling of objects in the workplace. These courses are designed to teach the basics of moving and handling objects safely, and they are approved by CPD and other relevant organisations. This means this course is tax deductible for appropriate professions.

Do Manual Handling Certificates Expire?

In some places in Australia, a manual handling certificate remains valid for two (2) years. Regardless of whether your certificate expires, manual handling refresher training should be taken at least every two to three years, but ideally once a year. Regardless, Safe Work Australia both advises that you update your Manual handling certification every year. Many organisations consider refreshing this training to be mandatory.

Why Are Manual Handling Tasks Important?

Manual handling tasks are very important as they involve physically exerting force to lift, carry, push, or pull objects. Recognising potential manual handling hazards to prevent injuries and promote a safe working environment is crucial.

Importantly, these courses help maintain correct posture and protect the spine. By practising correct spine posture, workers can minimise the risk of musculoskeletal injuries and maintain their overall well-being.
