Frequently Asked Questions

What are Manual Handling Tasks?

Manual handling comprises many different tasks, but the ultimate goal is to minimise risk when performing tasks which require the moving of heavy loads to reduce the likelihood of workplace injuries. The specific nature of manual handling tasks depends on the workplace, but common jobs involve lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling, carrying, or relocating of heavy loads or objects. In healthcare, specific duties include the relocation of patients.

Risk controls for manual handling include planning how to move a heavy load, positioning one's body correctly before lifting and carrying, using mechanical aids to assist with particularly heavy loads, and identifying and reporting unsafe practices.

Do I Need a Manual Handling Certificate?

Manual handling is relevant in most workplaces, but especially those in which employees often spend long periods preforming living, carrying, and moving tasks. However, not all careers require employees to hold a manual handling certification.

Whether or not this is the case is often up to the discretion of employers. Positions which most often require a manual handling certificate include construction workers, healthcare workers, and those in manufacturing, industry, freight, and logistics, to name a few. Plumbers, electricians, and other tradies who are not self-employed also often require a certification.

To find out if you need a manual handling certification, it's best to check with your employer. If you're applying for a new position the position requirements should outline whether a manual handling certification is required, but you can also contact them to find out.

How Long Does a Manual Handling Certificate Last?

The validity of a manual handling qualification in Australia varies depending on the state. Often, a manual handling qualification lasts for two (2) years, and in other circumstances, it may not expire at all. Regardless, a manually handling certification should be updated annually trough refresher training to ensure the skills and knowledge remain second nature.

Can I Take a Manual Handling Course Online?

No. While part of your training includes e-readings to be completed on your own time, there are no online courses for manual handling. The only way to correctly learn the best and safest manual handling techniques is first hand through practical training sessions.

What are the Consequences of Improper Manual Handling?

Poor manual handling includes lifting awkward loads, loads that are too heavy, failure to identify potential risks, and using awkward postures. Moving heavy loads in this way can lead to various injuries, including damage to your musculoskeletal system, or the development of chronic and acute pain.

By using safe manual handling techniques you can reduce the likelihood of these injuries. Avoid lifting above shoulder height, seek additional support when lifting heavy objects, ensure you always perform risk assessment, and lift and carry objects using the proper posture.
