Frequently Asked Questions

What Are Manual Handling Tasks?

Manual handling encompasses a variety of activities, with the primary objective being to mitigate risk during operations that involve transporting heavy loads to decrease the chance of occupational injuries. The particular tasks associated with manual handling vary by the work setting, yet typical responsibilities entail lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling, hauling, or shifting heavy items or objects. In the healthcare sector, specific responsibilities consist of moving patients.

Risk management strategies for manual handling encompass devising strategies for transporting a hefty load, aligning one's physique properly prior to lifting and transporting, utilising mechanical devices for support with especially heavy loads, and recognising and documenting hazardous procedures.

Do I Need a Manual Handling Certificate?

Manual handling is significant in nearly all work environments, particularly in settings where workers frequently engage in lifting, hauling, and transporting tasks for extended durations. Nevertheless, not every profession mandates a manual handling certificate.

Whether such certification is necessary typically depends on the employer's judgment. Roles that commonly necessitate a manual handling certificate encompass construction laborers, medical personnel, and individuals in production, industry, cargo, and logistics, among others. Plumbers, electricians, and other skilled tradespeople who work for others frequently need a certificate as well.

To determine if a manual handling certification is required for you, consulting with your employer is advisable. If you're seeking a new job, the job specifications should indicate if a manual handling certificate is necessary, but reaching out to them for confirmation is also an option.

How Long Does a Manual Handling Certificate Last?

The duration of a manual handling certification in Australia depends on the region. Typically, a manual handling certification is valid for two to three years, but in some jurisdictions, it might never expire. However, it's recommended that a manual handling certificate be renewed yearly through refresher courses to maintain the skills and knowledge as instinctual.

Can I Take a Manual Handling Course Online?

While you can take a Manual Handling course online in Australia, First Aid Pro does not offer the course in this format. Although your training encompasses e-readings to be finished independently, there are no virtual classes for manual handling. The sole method to accurately acquire the most effective and secure manual handling methods is firsthand via in person training sessions.

What are the Consequences of Improper Manual Handling?

Work related injuries impose a major financial cost on the Australian economy every year. Inadequate manual handling involves hoisting cumbersome loads, lifting objects that are excessively heavy, neglecting to recognise potential hazards, and adopting improper stances. Transporting hefty items in such a manner may result in a range of injuries, such as harm to your musculoskeletal structure, or the emergence of chronic and acute discomfort.

Through the application of secure manual handling practices, you can decrease the risk of even the most common injuries. Refrain from lifting beyond shoulder height, solicit extra help when hoisting substantial objects, take breaks during long periods of exertion, make sure you consistently conduct risk assessments, and lift and transport items with the correct posture.
