Interpreter Policy

Introduction:

The objective of this policy and procedure is to outline the protocol for involving an interpreter in student training or assessment. FirstAidPro is committed to facilitating the education of all individuals, including those with culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds. This policy should be used in conjunction with the Language Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) Policy.

Scope and Application:

Where a student’s Language Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) is considered as being below the standard required for a course, the student will be advised and may be directed to either an English as a Second Language (ESL) training centre and asked to return once they have reached a reasonable level of proficiency or to a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) that provides the course with a full suite of Language Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) support.

Compliance

Skills Training College is committed to complying with all relevant Australian laws and guidelines, including but not limited to the Disability Discrimination Act 1992, the National Disability Strategy, and the National Standards for Disability Services.

Interpreter Qualifications

Accreditation Interpreters provide must hold appropriate accreditation or qualifications in their respective fields, including National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) certification for language interpreters.

Ongoing Professional Development Interpreters must engage in continuous professional development to enhance their skills and maintain accreditation.

Needs Assessment and Provision of Interpreters

Assessment Procedure

It is the responsibility of students with communication barriers or disabilities to source an accredited interpreter and apply for approval with FirstAidPro.

Learner Responsibilities:

Educators and staff will receive training on working effectively with interpreters and creating an inclusive learning environment for all students.

Approval for Interpreter

Students must complete the interpreter approval form a minimum of one week prior to training. The Interpreter Request Form can be completed below. 

Once approval has been granted, the interpreter must show proof of NAATI registration at reception. 

Non-accredited interpreters are not permitted to perform interpreting services. Once approval has been granted FirstAidPro will inform the trainer which student(s) will be providing an interpreter and which language interpretation services will be provided.
